Even though the amount of comments that were less than positive was a bummer.

But that’s not the point, the point is that I got to thinking about having a collection. And the purpose of that collection.

Now even in the oldest photo I have, I’d only played maybe half of those games. Far less than half were the number of games I played all the way through. Even smaller is a number that I 100%.
Matter of fact I don’t think any of those games would make it to the 100% list. Some in the second image but easy ones that didn’t take going out of the way.

It’s an interesting perspective, for a while there I just played games with no thought at all about the “completion” of said game. I would just move through them until I got bored, or more realistically, attention shifted to the next game. It wasn’t until deep into the Xbox 360 when my friends would introduce me to the concept. For several of them that was a large secondary, or at times the entire reason, to play particular games.
At first I was against that idea, it seemed to cheapen the experience. Take away from the main point of the game when you’re just grinding achievements and getting that 100% list as big as possible.

I care far less what others think nowadays. But to this day I absolutely enjoy getting an achievement in a game. It’s a nice little pop of serotonin. And it can genuinely feel like an accomplishment depending on what it is. But I do refuse to look at the list until I have beaten the campaign. That’s a habit of mine, it has somewhat to do with spoilers and more to do with simply wanting to experience the story as it is first, and then give me more to do assuming I enjoy the game.

And then the game is done, it goes on a shelf… or at least it did. With everything being digital and each platform wanting to track things themselves and never will they meet, I don’t have an actual way to “collect” what games I’ve beaten, put enough time into to call done if it’s endless, or enjoyed enough to 100%.

Until now…

I’ve been working on this in bits and pieces, it’s not done but it’s close enough to call it live. I’ll be adding to it as I remember more, Trueachievements and Steam made it easy to see what games I’ve got digitally. Time stamped achievements let me see exactly when I finished it, which is beautiful.

And in the end, it’s something that brings me joy. Not quite like the stacks of games I would take a picture of and send to my friend going “alright here’s what I have, bring these for co-op or new stuff when you come over.” Because life isn’t like that today. But still, as long as I’ve got my own website I can have my ongoing collection.

And it brings me joy.

Just thought of another one to add from the old PC days.

2010 – 2011, simply having a large amount of Xbox 360 games made me happy in a small way.
