Considering I’ve played about 80 hours in my all time favorite MMO, The Elder Scrolls Online.

But it’s funny how it doesn’t feel to me like the same thing anymore.

On paper, I also have played a considerable amount of Megaman Battle Network, the original. As I jumped into the series with #3, and then touched a few of the later ones on occasion. But 3 was the top tier choice for me. Of course it came only after I bought the wrong game, I’m sure that was something I touched on when I dug through my old GBA cartridges during a video.

As of now I am on a megaman break, I want to get back to 3 and relive those excellent memories. I also am concerned after playing 1 that I might not enjoy it as much. The first game had some moments, but overall it was kind of a slog. I vaguely remember such a slog from 3, but I think I enjoyed the battle system so much I didn’t have as much of a problem with it.

I also should mention at this point, it’s my new workout game. Which could mean that I’m unfairly judging it by playing in half hour installments, broken up by literal repetitive movements that I dislike.

Hmm, should dig into that further. Looking at my list of games I have played while exercising… No, I guess it’s just a feeling. The majority of such games I have enjoyed, just a few that I didn’t. So I won’t attribute the mindset of forcing myself to exercise to contribute to the game enjoyment or lack there of.

Anyway, Elder Scrolls Online came back hard. The battle pass system was a good pull to get me interested, which then pivoted to what I always fall back on, slight improvements to various characters. I made much better lists and tracking systems for myself so I always had a goal to work towards, for a long time it was just playing on the main character and completing story quests in every area of the game. However, I completed that a long time ago. The game is still quite fun.

For years the routine has been to play it at least a few hours a week, usually when I’m not up for anything heavily story related. Listening to a podcast or such.
But in addition to that, for at least the better part of a month or two, it’s become the entire focus.
Running dungeons, grinding for specific items for builds, working on a new character. Even completing a challenge I thought I did before. That Maelstrom solo arena is pretty doable on normal for me now… Veteran however, something I thought I did, was not so. I need some more fine tuning on a build there. I eventually got through it, but it took about a week of brutal attempts to clear a level a night.

And for my efforts, one perfected weapon given at random. It’s a damn good thing I did need a greatsword for one of my builds. Otherwise I would have been really disappointed. Now I just need to do it a good couple dozen more times. Eventually, when I’m up for it.

I will also mention they just did an update last week which was particularly intriguing to me, I’ve been really enjoying the sub class system for the last year or however long it’s been out. That got me right back in when I could mix and match skill lines from various classes to make one very cool character.
Now they’re balancing out for classes that stay pure with some extra bonuses.

Which means it’s time to get back to basics with the Dragonknight class, the very first one I started with.

However, magic based and yet using melee weapons? The builds are quite different from when I started.

Also soon werewolves are getting a bump and that is still an area of the game that I never touched, I’ve got a character already ready to dive into the world of lycanthropy. I think that may actually be live, but here we arrive at the main point that I started writing with in mind.

I don’t feel like I’ve been playing much of anything lately. It’s such a shame, because I clearly just listed quite a bit of enjoyment had. But on the other side of things I have spent just about every available minute outside with the other half of my life. I guess just because I’m not working through a game with a clear ending in sight I don’t feel like it’s as much of an accomplishment?

I don’t know. Hard to describe. I quite literally completed one game, although frustratingly so and through clenched teeth, and have been getting a great amount of enjoyment out of ESO.
But I just thought on it yesterday and came to the conclusion I have just had “no time for games” lately. A statement not even remotely true, and I don’t even think of things in that way.

So it’s not a real “dry spell” of me not playing games, it just feels that way.

Maybe because I finally picked back up The Witcher 3 after taking a break since the end of April, thoroughly enjoyed and am so far enjoying the DLC quest I started.
Just in time for another expansion next year?

Also, over the last month, I’ve had at least 4 recording sessions of playing games. That’s not nearly as many as I used to do, this time last year it was more like 2-3x that. But somehow that also doesn’t count in my mind?

That’s probably the key thing there, my mind should not be picked over with any sort of sense of finding logic or reason from an outside perspective. It all makes sense up there to me so, I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing. Which is having a lot of fun.

Also playing Magic the Gathering multiple nights a week at the local card shop

Also group watching a TV show with my sister at least one night a week

Also keeping up with the usual amount of recording wildlife, upped to multiple outings a week

Also running 2x 2+ hour D&D sessions x2 weekends a month. (That’s 4)

Also editing constantly to stay on top of the wildlife videos, the video game recordings, the D&D sessions.

2026 is the year of “yes please” when it comes to things I enjoy. And it surely can sustain at this pace.

…surely.

Alright last thoughts here, ESO good. Megaman less good. Pokemon Pinball I didn’t even mention, just playing that on my phone when I have a few minutes. It’s way better than any mobile game currently active today filled with microtransactions and ads.

Recording games is going well, but could be more. I’m still ahead by 2 months in the made up schedule I have where I still have a video a day coming out. A streak that I know for sure will be broken, physically I do not leave myself enough time to play and record 3.5 hours a week. I’m definitely more okay with that streak getting broken at some point. No one is keeping count but myself, and to be fair I’m actually finally into a good arc where I think I’m enjoying all the games I’m recording. That’s a twist from how it was at the start. I do have another older game to start up very soon, which risks leading back into “no fuck you stupid ass game” territory. But we’ll see. Megaman Battle Network #1 hit that pretty quick. I look forward to picking up with #2 sometime later and hope they made many improvements. At least get away from “Okay go figure out where to go next” with no direction. Needing a general guide walkthrough to just figure out where to go at each step instead of blindly wandering was not my favorite.

But I try to keep in mind that it was a different time 20+ years ago. I had more time on my hands and didn’t mind it as much. I have no patience for it now, the back and forth walking from map to map just to interact with an npc and do nothing else to further my experience, just is how games were back then. I honestly wonder if from a game design perspective that was on purpose to stretch out the length of the game, as the more time spent in a game means the game is better?

No.

More time spent having fun in the game is better, for example see my recently crossed 2,000 hour mark in The Elder Scrolls Online.

I’d say I haven’t been playing much since I wrapped up The Witcher 3’s main campaign at the end of April, but that wouldn’t be exactly true.
