What does the future hold? 12/5/20

We’ve started a new program at my job. A program that I wouldn’t have expected as it doesn’t pertain to work exactly. However I am always open to new ideas and this one is about dreaming and achieving goals you set.

To cut to the chase, I want to do this as my career. I don’t fully know what that will look like yet, because it’s not 100% up to me. But it’s time I made a real effort. Up until this point I have been treating this as a hobby that would be cool if it took off. But always keeping things based in reality and only having one foot in. Even when I splurge and get a piece of equipment for photography I make sure I’m not breaking the bank or putting myself into a hole I can’t climb out of. And while I still haven’t done anything detrimental to my finances, I did make a decision that will affect my life in the long term.

I took out a loan and reconsolidated my debt to have a lower monthly payment, and I can’t keep spending on a loan it’s a one time thing. That was about half of the loan. The other half is an investment into what I want to be doing full time.

Capturing wildlife moments on video in really high quality. I want to learn about being a wildlife cinematographer and either make my own videos independently or be hired by a larger production company to do so.

I’m working on coming up with kind of a roadmap to get me to where I want to be. Basically going out and finding as much wildlife as I can, hopefully getting some cool shots captured and edited into a reel of sorts. All the while posting online and sharing it with the internet.

My hope is to gain a following of wildlife enthusiasts who are willing to spare a couple dollars a month in order to get advanced and exclusive access to all the content I create.

To be clear, I did start another youtube channel recently with silly food videos that I will of course be continuing as I have a lot of fun with that. But my focus for now needs to be wildlife. That is what I am passionate about and what I want to do every waking minute of the day.

So what’s next? Well I got the camera and accessories, almost everything was perfect. The SSD recorder was DOA and has to be sent back, so in the meantime I grabbed a USB-C NVME drive I already had and went out this morning. I’ll post all about it on my Patreon and that will make it’s way to this blog shortly after. I’m gonna try my hand at other content as well to try and grow in whatever way it takes to build an audience. I’ve never really cared about a vlog, but I figure it’s pretty close to what I’m already doing except I’ll take a second camera with me and shoot stuff while I’m out and about.
That at least does not rely on actually finding wildlife. Which is going to be the most challenging part of this.

So if the above interests you, I’ve got a clip I’m editing right now of what I saw today. Spoiler alert, it was really really really far away so the quality is not what I even call passable. But it was four legged and was a wolf. Hopefully you can guess from those subtle clues.
I will obviously be posting much better things as I record them, little clips and videos as I shoot and collect for larger full fledged documentary style videos. Also scenery shots, landscapes etc. Maybe I’ll grab the macro lens next time and find some cool nature to look at really close.
There’s a lot I can do, and there’s no time like now to do it.
