Getting back out there - 9/8/20

Been a bit since an update, which is because I was waiting for my car to be delivered. Ordered a 4 wheel drive as I knew it would be handy for both what I wanted to do with hauling around photography gear, and for the upcoming winter. Having come from Georgia I know it won’t be anything like what we’ve had for snow in the past.

It arrived on Saturday, did a bit of driving around in the morning when it got here to test it out. I really like it, handles smooth. Last car I had was a Hyundai Sonata so the extra room is great for all my stuff to go in the back.

I took it out Sunday morning for some picture taking. Just a short trip to start getting my bearings and see what I can find. Being labor day weekend I expected places to be busy, and they were. Pretty close to the city of Casper is Casper mountain. Very pretty place with a great viewing spot. I took these pictures from there of the landscape.

It wasn’t exactly the prettiest morning because of all the smoke in the air. For the past few weeks the fires in Colorado have clogged up the skies here as well. Very unfortunate and I hope they are able to get them under control.

No wildlife on Sunday, there were a lot of people camping on the mountain and I was driving around to see what areas I could go to.

On Monday, as I kind of had off of work, I packed up pretty early and hit the road. This time driving much further away to a wildlife reserve. Thinking that would give me a better chance to see, well wildlife.

First thing I took a picture of was the landscape. I had pulled off at the information kiosk to get a picture of the map and make sure I read any rules. There’s a pretty nice lake and river with some mountain range behind it.
However, as it was also the holiday and I had come to campgrounds again, there were a lot of people camping here. Now I don’t want to bother anyone, or be bothered by anyone. So I just kept driving along the dirt/sand roads. Trying my best to avoid where people were camping as it was just sunrise and I imagine most people were asleep since I didn’t see anyone outside of their campers.
I pretty much followed the roads until I didn’t feel safe anymore, really steep inclines i wasn’t sure I could get back up. That was pretty much where I called it and turned around. I did get a little stuck at one point when I was turning onto one road which was entirely sand. Up over one bump and the front wheel started spinning.
Thankfully I wasn’t trapped in the middle of nowhere with no cell service and no way to get my car unstuck. I had 4 wheel drive, popped it into reverse and just used the back wheels. But that was pretty much cementing that I wasn’t going that direction. I plan to go back to a different area away from the campgrounds and see what I can find next time.

I did come across some wildlife during the driving part. I turned a corner and crossing the road in front of me were 3 deer.

Mule Deer I believe, from the size of their ears and the rope like tail with a black tip. Where as a Whitetail Deer that I’ve seen before have a bigger kind of bushier tail.
They watched me cautiously as I got out of the car and grabbed the camera from the trunk. Took a few pictures as they moved on, and then I did as well. Back to the main road I had come in on. I did see a patch of water that I wanted to check out before I headed home.

Not too much to look at, but there was life down there. I didn’t get too close as there is literally nothing for me to use as cover and not disturb anything.

Canon 7D Mark II w/300mm + 1.4x - 1/1000 - F4 - ISO 100

Little hard to tell, as again I couldn’t really get close. And I cropped this one in, so I was still a good distance away. But a lot easier to identify once you see this one and the others in flight.

Group of Mallard Ducks. Not the best picture but again this is pretty cropped to just give you an idea of what I was looking at. Thinking my next purchase needs to be a 2x teleconverter instead of the 1.4x. Out here with big empty spaces it’ll be a lot harder to get closer to the wildlife and I think anything I can do to give me more reach would be ideal.

I did hear some birds tweeting and watched them flitting from place to place until I managed to get a shot of it sitting on these rocks. I believe this to be a Rock Wren, although it doesn’t exactly match what I’m seeing online or in the bird book. So I’ll call this one questionable identification. I’ll really crop it in and put that below. Please let me know if you have any better idea of what I’ve seen. It does match the location and season for a Rock Wren. And it’s got a nice long beak and some spotted gray around the head. Just not as brown as the examples I’m seeing.

7DM29899.jpg

This next one I’ve come to recognize quite well. The Black-Billed Magpie with it’s great white and blue coloring and very long tail. I saw several around the highway when I was driving to and from. They seem to be quite common, but I have yet to snag a great photo of one. One day I will.

Canon 7D Mark II w/300mm + 1.4x - 1/1000 Sec - F4 - ISO 100

That was about it for the water area. As I mentioned it was just big empty area with nowhere for me to really hunker down where I was out of sight. I’m going to be doing some more research and try and find other places to go. I expect it will take me some time of searching based on how long it took me back in Georgia.

I did see another bird as I was leaving, sitting on the telephone wires.

A Western Bluebird. As it has bits of orange it is still molting into I think it to be female, as it has a lot of gray and the males are much more blue. But the orange does make me think Western and not Mountain. Although Western isn’t listed as in my area, maybe the family was traveling. Actually I’m just now thinking about how the wild fires are upsetting the wildlife and causing them to seek shelter elsewhere. So that would explain it to me. The Western Bluebird doesn’t quite make it to Wyoming, but it does Colorado in the summer. And with the fires in Colorado maybe they came further north to escape.
Pure speculation from a non-expert.

The last thing I did on my way home was stop at a pull off I had seen on my way to the wildlife reserve. It was an overlook for the big lake that I have seen in my research of the area and honestly plan to avoid during the summer. Geo-location tagged photos lead me to believe this is the hot spot for young adults with boats drinking and partying. No thanks, not gonna be able to view much wildlife there. Likely during the off seasons I’ll check it out.
But the view was really nice, you can see for such a long ways.

Again, I’d like to head back there on a clear day and see what visibility is like.

Overall not bad for an outing. I like my car and I plan to go back out a lot more. There’s a lot of area around me to explore. I plan to try and scout out some locations first with just the photography gear before I get back to making videos.

First wildlife outing in Wyoming - 8/15/20

Blog posts now coming to you same day of shooting.

This morning I woke up earlier than I expected for a Saturday. Especially considering that I was up late last night. Just after 2pm I got the final components for my new editing pc.

IMG_20200814_141014.jpg
IMG_20200814_141018.jpg

With all the parts laid out I set to work. Following videos and googling whenever I ran into a question I didn’t know the answer to. I had taken apart some old computers before but this was the first time I was building one from scratch.

IMG_20200814_202855.jpg

The aftermath wasn’t pretty.

IMG_20200814_202930.jpg

The end result I’m pretty happy with. It was 100% performance over aesthetics. Plus that gives me some projects to tinker with over time. For example when the case got delivered on Wednesday and I realized I should put more than just the included 2 fans I just picked some with somewhat decent reviews and RGB of course. The front fans you can’t see are only white… for now. I have more of the cheap-o RGB fans coming in. Just have to run some tests when they get here to make sure they cool properly. As it sits right now it’s pretty nice.
And this was just a quick and dirty picture with the phone to share with family and friends at the end of a 7 hour build. Once I get the desk looking better as well I’ll take a nicer picture with the DSLR.

Anyway, enough about the powerhouse that will be editing 4k video soon enough. I woke up early and decided it was perfect to start scouting this new area and find wildlife locations.

A lake not too far away was the place I chose to visit this morning. Being there as the sun was rising let me take advantage of the golden hour.

From some research they are considered a “Noxious weed” because they can quickly reproduce and take over areas while not being useful for grazing livestock.

They also bloom into some really pretty flowers that I’d like to go back with my macro lens and take more pictures of.

As I was walking along the trail I spotted this big sparrow swoop in and land on the very top of the this tree branch. Some digging leads me to believe this is a Savannah Sparrow as they are common throughout the US and it’s actually hard to identify sometimes. Like when it’s the golden hour making it more yellow than usual and one of the ways to help narrow down the identification is a yellow patch.

These next two images aren’t great, but I cropped them in so you could see a bit of detail on what is a fantastic spotting for the day. A Black Billed Magpie, identified by the white on it’s wings and the extremely long tail.

Should have jumped to one of my other custom shooting settings where I have faster shutter speeds ready to go. But I’m not being too hard on myself, I haven’t gone out for wildlife photography in months.

Out on the lake I managed to see some waterfowl, and I can add a few new ones to the collections.

First was the Double-Crested Cormorant, which will dive under the water to seek out fish.

Beautiful creature.

And as I kept watching over the lake there were others that came in for a landing. This big group of Common Merganser females, identified by red coloring on the head as the males have a dark green head. Also the body has more white than gray.

I had a bit of trouble getting focus on the group, for some reason the one making all the splashes was drawing my attention.

As they paddled along they did all group up at one point, and I managed to get a decent shot then. This was a much bigger lake than I had imagined and everything was staying pretty far away, I was shooting at quite the distance.

Now this next one, a few times over the last few weeks I would catch a slight glimpse of bright yellow looking out the window. I plan to put up a bird feeder for all the local birds but from the first part of this post you know where my money has been going.

Thankfully I finally managed to be quick enough with the camera to catch these next few shots of the mysterious yellow bird. Now identified as the Yellow Warbler. If I’m correct a female as the males have red streaks along their chest.

Alongside this lake is the river that runs across much of the area. I knew that before hand and was hoping the trail would take my alongside it. Which it did. What I was not expecting was to see much of seabirds considering how landlocked we are. But I walked out from behind the trees along the trail and fumbled with my camera as I tried desperately to quickly get a shot of the biggest white pelican I’ve ever seen. It was massive! I couldn’t get a shot off as it saw me and took off. But it was just standing in the river evidently fishing. Can’t wait to go back out there and see if I can spot another.

As I stood at the river edge I did manage to get some shots of the other waterfowl about. Including what I believe to be a Yellowlegs of the Sandpiper family. Not sure if it’s greater or lesser though as I’ve never seen one before for comparison.

For the first day out I’m very pleased with the results. I have to get back into the habit of shooting and relearning those skills I haven’t used in a bit. Also should give all my equipment a thorough cleaning after being all packed up.

I also have placed an order for a new car, well used but new to me. 4 wheel drive for the upcoming snow I know we’ll be getting out here. Once that gets delivered I’ll be able to go out further without stranding my girlfriend at home by taking her car.

Wyoming - From the car - 8/9/20

This past Wednesday after I clocked out from work we took a drive out along the interstate. See the area, familiarize ourselves with the area and roads my girlfriend would be taking for work. And most important to me, break out the DSLR and take some pictures for the family back home.

Just outside the city life still exists with hotels and restaurants. But look at the landscape!

According to my dad, who lived up north and saw these kinds of fences in Vermont. They are there to create snow drifts and try and keep the roads open.

Makes sense, I had never seen an interstate with signs at every exit warning that it was closed when flashing and exit now. In the winter seems like it doesn’t become safe to drive with the snow.

Horses. Knew they would be somewhere.

Also out in Wyoming is oil. I’ve learned a lot of Wyoming money comes from oil mining. Or refining. Something to do with oil. I have a lot to learn about it. But hopefully they turn more green in the future. I did see wind turbines around. Haven’t managed to get a good picture of one yet.

And that was the little trip out. I didn’t expect us to get caught in a hail storm. But we did. There was a sign on the interstate about a thunderstorm warning ahead, hadn’t seen that before. But we didn’t hear any thunder or see lightning. It just turned from rain into hail that was fairly decently sized. Very unexpected.

So that brings us to current. Where I am in my basement that is mostly all set up now for remote work and for computer gaming. I have already been buying stuff like crazy to replace things in the house that we had to leave behind. And I made sure to set aside enough for computer components. I’ve got all the pieces coming in the mail over the next week. Assuming all goes well and it arrives safely I should be building a new pc next weekend capable of editing 4k footage. Which is great because I am itching to get out and see some nature before winter. We’re quarantining ourselves since we traveled from such a hotspot of Covid cases and had to stay in hotels the whole way here. Getting everything delivered that we can and avoiding going around other people.

I also will need to get myself a car once we can get licenses and whatnot transferred. Then I’ll really be set to head to the nearby places I’ve been looking at online. I really want to go back to some of the places along the highway and actually get out and take a better picture. All of that was just from the passenger seat in the car while we were doing highway speeds.

Soon.
